A message from UT TYLER EMERGENCY COMMUNICATIONS (PATRIOTALERT)

The University of Texas at Tyler is issuing the following special weather advisory for students and employees of UT Tyler:

The National Weather Service indicates that severe weather may impact the Tyler area this afternoon and evening, including severe thunderstorms and tornado activity. This is not an imminent threat, but severe weather is possible within the next few hours.

The NWS has indicated that conditions are conducive for potentially very dangerous tornadic supercell thunderstorms.

As of this time, the University is operating normally and all classes are continuing on schedule, but please monitor weather radios and media broadcasts for pertinent information. The City of Tyler or UT Tyler outdoor warning sirens may sound to indicate that severe weather has reached or is near campus.

Please be prepared to do the following before the severe weather strikes:

•    Ensure your safety and that of your family
•    Advise other students and/or employees of approaching weather
•    Backup important computer files
•    Turn off and unplug computer and other essential office equipment
•    Close and lock all doors and windows, and shut blinds
•    Secure labs
•    Move away from windows

If the City of Tyler or UT Tyler outdoor warning sirens sound or weather radios or other information indicate a tornado, move immediately to the designated tornado shelter area in your building and remain there until the ALL CLEAR is given by the proper authorities.

Information on the status of the University will be sent via e-mail, posted on the UT Tyler web site, and may be available through local media.

After the weather has passed, please check the area for injured persons or building damages.

PatriotALERT Test

A message from UT Tyler Emergency Communications (PatriotALERT)

This is a test of the PatriotALERT emergency notification service for The University of Texas at Tyler. This is NOT an emergency.

In the event of an emergency, all students, faculty and staff will be notified by a combination of email, text, and voice messages using PatriotALERT. The system will be used to distribute important information regarding emergencies that dictate immediate action, like tornado warnings or an active shooter on campus.

If you have not done so, we strongly encourage students to go to the myUT Tyler Student Portal and update your telephone contact information. If your information is not updated, we will not be able to contact you in an emergency. Your CELL PHONE number is the most important number to provide so that you can receive voice and text messages during a emergency. Because students, faculty and staff are constantly on the move, this system provides the flexibility for you to receive emergency messages on multiple devices.

More information and instructions can be found at: http://www.uttyler.edu/emergency/

Employees can also go to the web site for instructions on how to update their contact information.

Remember, if you are in class or in your dorm room, PatriotALERT may be the only way you receive notification of an emergency on campus. This is why it is important that you keep your contact information updated.

Thank you for your cooperation as we work to ensure your safety on the UT Tyler campus.

If you have questions about PatriotALERT, e-mail patriotalert@uttyler.edu.

University to Test PatriotALERT System Tuesday at 11 a.m.

A message from UT Tyler Emergency Communications (PatriotALERT)

The University of Texas at Tyler will conduct a campus-wide test of the PatriotALERT Emergency Notification Service at approximately 11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 12, 2011.

When the test is initiated, all students, faculty and staff who are currently registered and have correct contact information in the PatriotALERT system will receive an e-mail, text (SMS) message, and a phone call with a message announcing the test.  Based on past testing, it may take up to 10-minutes for all messages to be delivered.

Weather permitting, the University will also test its outdoor warning system at the same time.

PatriotALERT is the official emergency notification service for UT Tyler. It is a mass notification system comprised of e-mail, voice and text messaging that is designed to send emergency messages to all UT Tyler students, faculty, and staff in minutes. It supplements existing means of emergency communication, including the outdoor warning system and severe weather alert radios.

Examples of emergencies for which Patriot ALERT will be used include severe weather like a tornado, building evacuations, dangers like an active shooter that require lock-down or shelter-in-place, or other emergencies requiring immediate action.

Students, faculty and staff can ensure that their contact information is correct by following these instructions:

Students: UT Tyler students can check and update their information in the myUTTyler student information portal by going to http://my.uttyler.edu and following these instructions:

  • Log-in to myUT Tyler.
  • Click on the "Student Home Page" tab in the upper left corner.
  • Click on the "Student Center" link in the right-side "System Access" menu.
  • Scroll down to the "Personal Information" section and use the pull-down menu to select "Phone Numbers" then click the forward icon.
  • You may provide up to three phone numbers - the Campus, Home, and Cellular numbers will be used. The cellular number is most important because you will receive text messages at that number.
  • Click "SAVE" when you have finished entering your phone numbers.

Faculty/Staff: UT Tyler employees can update their phone numbers using the UT Direct System (https://utdirect.utexas.edu/pnbiog/index.WBX). After logging-in, click on "Telephone Numbers." The "Home Phone 1" field should be used for a home telephone number, and the "Home Phone 2" field should be used for cellular/mobile number - this is the number that will also receive emergency text messages. Once you have updated your information in UT Direct, you will automatically begin receiving PatriotALERT emergency notifications.

If members of the University community experience a problem with the test or do not receive messages, please e-mail patriotalert@uttyler.edu.

Thank you.
