Action Steps for Students, Faculty, and Staff to Prevent the Spread of Flu

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends 4 main ways you may keep from getting sick with the flu:

  1. Practice good hand hygiene by washing your hands often with soap and water, especially after coughing or sneezing. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.
  2. Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. If you don’t have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your elbow or shoulder; not into your hands.
  3. Stay home or at your place of residence if you are sick for at least 24 hours after you no longer have a fever (100 degrees Fahrenheit or 38 degrees Celsius) or signs of a fever (have chills, feel very warm, have a flushed appearance, or are sweating). This should be determined without the use of fever-reducing medications (any medicine that contains ibuprofen or acetaminophen). Staying away from others while sick can prevent others from getting sick too. Ask a roommate, friend, or family member to check up on you and to bring you food and supplies if needed.
  4. Talk to your health care provider to find out if you should be vaccinated for seasonal flu and/or 2009 H1N1 flu. Information about 2009 H1N1 flu vaccination can be found at: www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/vaccination. Information about seasonal flu vaccine can be found at: www.cdc.gov/flu/protect/keyfacts.htm.

Follow these steps now to prepare for the flu during the 2009-2010 flu season:

  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Cover coughs or sneezes using your elbow or shoulder instead of your hands when a tissue is not available.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after coughing or sneezing. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.
  • Frequently clean your living quarters. If you live together with other students, you should frequently clean commonly-used surfaces such as doorknobs, refrigerator handles, remote controls, computer keyboards, countertops, faucet handles, and bathroom areas.
  • Plan to monitor your health by checking for fever and other symptoms of flu.
  • Talk with your health care provider if you are at higher risk for complications from flu.
  • Update emergency contact lists.

Alert: Severe Thunderstorm Watch.

For UT Tyler Campus, the NWS has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for your county, valid until 8:00PM Thu 08/06/09 CDT.

Outdoor Warning System Test Friday at 2:30 p.m.

UT Tyler will conduct the monthly test of its outdoor warning siren system at about 2:30 p.m. Friday, August 7, 2009. The test will begin with a voice message, followed by a series of tones, including a three-minute continuous tone, and conclude with an “all clear” message.

This monthly test is necessary to ensure that the outdoor warning siren system is functioning properly.

Because additional speaker arrays have been added to the system, residents in neighborhoods surrounding UT Tyler may hear the system for the first time.

The outdoor warning system allows for both tone and voice alerts to the campus and will be activated whenever there is an immediate danger to the UT Tyler campus. When the sirens are activated, people should not call the University Police Department or Tyler Police, but move to a safe place and obtain further information which will be released by text and e-mail messages, the University web site, and the news media.

The test will last for approximately ten minutes. In the event the National Weather Service issues watches or warnings for Smith County during the time period of the test, the system will not be tested.

For additional information and to hear what the sirens and messages sound like, visit http://www.uttyler.edu/emergency/.

Power Watch: High Electricity Demand Today; Conservation Needed

Power Watch – Conservation Needed

Electric Grid Operator Predicting High Electricity Demand Today

August 5, 2009 -- The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT),
grid operator for most of the state, and the Public Utility
Commission, are encouraging consumers and businesses to reduce their
electricity use today during peak electricity hours from 3 to 7 p.m.
due to expected high electricity usage.

"We have restricted reserves available today due to several unplanned
generation outages," Vice President of System Planning and Operations
Kent Saathoff said.  "We don't anticipate any electricity emergencies
today, but any additional generation outages or higher-than-expected
loads could reduce our reserves below minimum levels."

If reserves drop below certain levels, ERCOT operators can implement a
series of progressive steps in the Energy Emergency Alert procedures
that will provide additional emergency resources at each level.

The peak electricity demand is expected to be more than 63,200
megawatts (MW) today.  The current record for peak demand is 63,453 MW
which occurred July 13, 2009.  (One megawatt typically powers about
200 average homes during hot summer weather.)

Businesses and consumers are encouraged to:

- Set air conditioning thermostats to 80 degrees or higher.

- Cool with fans.

- Close blinds and drapes on windows that get direct sun.

- Turn off all unnecessary lights, appliances, and electronic equipment.

- Avoid using big appliances between the hours of 3 to 7 p.m.

Commission of Texas: www.puc.state.tx.us./ocp/conserve

BACKGROUND

Power Watches are issued by the regional electric grid operator, the
Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT), during periods of high
demand when supplies of reserve power are low.  At this stage, ERCOT
has emergency measures to bring on additional generation, so rotating
outages are not likely.  However, if all sources of supplies are
exhausted or large generation outages occur, ERCOT will order
utilities to begin reducing load by cutting service through rotating
outages.
